Microsoft Viva is Microsoft's employee experience platform. Rather than being a separate system staff must remember to visit, it delivers communications, knowledge, learning and wellbeing capability inside the tools they already have — principally Microsoft Teams and Microsoft 365.
The parts of Viva
Viva Connections is the gateway: a personalised feed and dashboard that brings your intranet, news and quick everyday tasks into Teams, on desktop and mobile. Viva Engage handles communities and organisation-wide conversation, including leadership communication, and grew out of Yammer. Viva Insights offers wellbeing and working-pattern insights, aggregated and de-identified for managers and leaders, with private personal insights for individuals. Viva Learning surfaces training in the flow of work, pulling from your LMS and content libraries.
Microsoft revises this line-up periodically — modules get consolidated, renamed and occasionally retired — so part of our job is telling you what is current, what your licences actually include, and what is worth adopting rather than simply switching on.
Viva Connections needs an intranet to present
This is the most common misunderstanding we encounter. Viva Connections does not create an intranet; it surfaces the SharePoint one you already have. If your intranet is poorly structured or out of date, Connections will faithfully deliver that experience into Teams and onto everyone's phone. The sequence that works is intranet first, Connections second — which is why our intelligent intranet work and Viva work usually happen together.
Reaching frontline and deskless staff
For organisations with staff who do not sit at a desk — healthcare, retail, construction, community services, manufacturing — this is where Viva earns its keep. Those teams routinely miss information because they do not work through email and rarely open an intranet on a laptop. Viva Connections in the Teams mobile app gives them one place for news, policies, shift information and the handful of tasks they actually need, on the phone already in their pocket. Adoption is the hard part
